Rosa Louise McCauley Parks was born on February 4, 1913, was an American activist in the civil rights movement. She was famous for her pivotal role in the Montgomery bus boycott where she refused to give up her seat in a public bus to a white passenger. She was also known as “the first lady of civil rights” and “the mother of the freedom movement” not because she was the first to be arrested for civil disobedience but because but she continued to fight the battle.

It is difficult to survive at that time with no financial support and was even harder for an activist to find a stable job. Rosa Parks also collaborated with leaders like E.D. Nixon and Martin Luther King Jr. When she was retired, she continued to believe that there is so much more work left to be done to bring equality and the fight for justice is far from over and she was right. She had received many accolades during her lifetime, including the Congressional Gold Medal, NAACP’s 1979 Spingarn Medal, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Rosa Parks died on 24 October 2005 at the age of 92. She got a posthumous statue in the United States Capitol’s National Statuary Hall. She was also the was the first woman to lie in honor in the Capitol Rotunda upon her death.
