Henry David Thoreau, one of the most famous American authors and philosophers, is known for his naturalist philosophy and his essay “Civil Disobedience” that reveals Thoreau’s defense of the private, individual conscience and his book “Walden”, which is a reflection on simple living and self-reliance.

Born in Concord, Massachusetts on July 12, 1817, Thoreau was a precocious child who loved the outdoors. He graduated from Harvard In 1837 and then work at Concord public school. He also began writing essays and poems. In Concord, he realized he was not the strict type, a disciplinarian, so he resigned after only two weeks.

He and his brother John opened their own school named concord Acamedy in 1838 but the school closed in 1842 due to his brother’s illness which leads to his death.

Upon graduation, Thoreau returned to Concord where he met Ralph Waldo Emerson and become his disciple. Through Emerson, he was exposed to Transcendentalism and began writing nature poetry.

In 1845, Thoreau moved into a cabin on Walden Pond and spent two years living a simple life in nature. It was during this time that he wrote some of his best works.

In 1846, Thoreau spent a night in jail for refusing to pay taxes because of his opposition to the Mexican–American War and slavery.

Thoreau was very interested in nature and the environment. He believed that people should get back to nature and live a simple life. He also believed in civil disobedience, which means disobeying laws that you believe are unjust.

He died on May 6, 1862, at the age of 44.
