Lal Bahadur Shastri (2 October 1904 – 11 January 1966) was an Indian statesman who served as the second Prime Minister of India. Shastri was born on 2 October sharing his birthday with Mahatma Gandhi in Mughalsarai to Sharada Prasad Srivastava and Ramdulari Devi. Being through a difficult childhood, his father died when Shastri was just a toddler. Her mother then took her three children to their her father’s house and settled down there.

Born in the Bhojpuri Hindu Kayastha family, Shastri studied in East Central Railway Inter college and Harish Chandra High School. He had to walk many miles barefoot to school, even if the streets burned in summer. Growing up, he started developing an interest in the struggle for the freedom of India from the British rules. He was so impressed by Mahatma Gandhi‘s work that he left school to join the non-cooperation movement.

Shastri got married to Lalita Devi in 1927. It is a traditional marriage but Shastri was against the dowry system. They only accept a spinning wheel and a few yards of handspun cloth. He struggled beside Gandhi for the freedom of India. He led many defiant campaigns and spent 7 years in a British jail.

Following the Independence of India in 1947, he became part of the government and Nehru’s key cabinet colleague. In 1965, Shastri led the Indo-Pak war. His slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” which means “Hail to the soldier; Hail to the farmer” became very popular at that time. On 10 January 1966, the Indo-Pak war ended with the Tashkent Agreement, and Shastri died on 11 January 1966.
