Swami Vivekananda was born on 12 January 1863 was an Indian Hindu monk. Bon with the name of Narendranath Datta, Swami Vivekananda was a chief disciple of the 19th-century Indian mystic Ramakrishna.
Born in Calcutta, West Bengal in a typical Bengali family, he was one of those people who introduced Vedanta and yoga types of Indan philosophies to the western world. He also raised the status of the Hinduism religion as the major world religion at his time.
Famous for his speech that began with “Sisters and brothers of America …” where he introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1893. Since his childhood, he was always inclined towards spirituality, meditating at the very young age in front of hindu dieties such as Lord Shiva and Rama and when he found his guru Shri Ramakrishna, he influenced him and taught that all living beings were an embodiment of the divine self; therefore, service to God could be rendered by service to humankind.
After the death of his guru Shri Ramakrishna, Vivekananda started traveling and learning about the conditions prevailing in British India. Later he went to the United States in 1893, where the famous speech we mentioned takes place in the Parliament of the World’s Religions.
Later he conducted hundreds of public and private lectures and classes, teaching the Hindu philosophies in the United States, England and Europe. Vivekananda is known as the famous patriotic saint in india and his birthday is celebrated as the National Youth Day.
When his guru, Ramakrishna died, many of his students and devotees stopped following his disciples and returned to their home and started their family. Later, Narendra decided to convert an old house into a new monastery for the remaining devotees. They named the Baranagar place to Ramakrishna Math where they spent a large of their time practicing meditation and religious austerities daily.
Swami Vivekananda died on 4th July, 1902. At the day of his death, Vivekananda woke up early, went to the monastry at Belur Math and gie three hours to the meditation. Doing his usual teaching in the day, he returned to his room at 7:00 pm and asked not to be disturbed.
It is said that he died at 9:20 pm while meditating but according to his devotees, he attained mahasamadhi. But later it is claimed that the rupture of a blood vessel in his brain was reported as a possible cause of death. He was criminated opposite to his guru Ramakrishna.
